Competition heeling is a precise dog sport where the dog walks in a specific position next to its handler, maintaining focus and alignment through various movements and commands. The goal is for the dog's right shoulder to be aligned with the handler's left leg, which acts as the guiding leg, while staying focused on the handler and responding instantly to their movements. Training involves breaking the behavior into small, manageable steps using techniques like luring, rewarding, and positive reinforcement to build a strong foundation.
Whether or not you want to compete, every dog owner should consider some form of obedience training. It’s the best way to establish good communication skills between you and your dog – and to make sure that your dog is the most well-behaved one in your neighborhood!
